I wish people would just loose the association between bards and minstrels. Bards were musicians for a small amount of the time. They were the weavers of epic poems, and stories, carrying the history of their people in the oral tradition from one kingdom to the next. Sometimes that would also require them to sing, and sometimes they might play an instrument, that was just to help the narrative. Dungeons and dragons has a lot to blame for.
